The state of Colorado has been enjoying recreational cannabis from the flowers to the food, but the Marijuana Enforcement Division wants to make sure things don’t get carried away — particularly when it comes to children and young adults under the legal cannabis consumption age of 21.
According to reports from the Denver Post, emergency measures have been put into place to make sure that edibles are strictly regulated to ensure the safety of the general public. Manufacturers must comply with new rules regarding maximum potency, serving size and packaging standards that easily display each item’s contents.
Dispensaries, while still operating within a 100 milligram limitation on recreational edibles, must ensure the products can be broken into portions that are 10 milligrams or less.
All edibles will also have to be packaged in child-resistant containers by the manufacturers before they are shipped to retail locations. Officials hope the new regulations will help with issues of overconsumption in new or unprepared cannabis consumers as well as prevent children from having access to edibles. The new rules will go into effect on Nov. 1.
